The IB Continuum: A Coherent Pathway for Lifelong Learning

The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers a seamless continuum of learning through four interconnected programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), Diploma Programme (DP), and Career-related Programme (CP). Each stage is designed to deepen understanding, foster critical thinking, and develop global competencies in age-appropriate ways.

Eton Hill Academy is currently a candidate school for both the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP), building a strong foundation in inquiry, conceptual understanding, and international mindedness from early childhood through middle school. For high school, our students have the opportunity to continue their IB journey at Tung Der International High School, an authorized IB World School offering the Diploma Programme (DP). Together, our schools provide a comprehensive and aligned IB experience from early years to graduation.

Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is built on a transdisciplinary approach, recognizing that young learners naturally connect ideas across subjects. Each Unit of Inquiry (UOI) weaves together multiple disciplines—such as language, math, science, social studies, or the arts—reflecting how children experience the world holistically. For example, when exploring 3D shapes, students not only learn mathematical concepts but also build vocabulary, apply scientific reasoning, and make real-world connections. By integrating learning in this way, the PYP fosters deep understanding and long-lasting conceptual connections that support future academic growth.

Middle Years Programme (MYP)

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) bridges the transition from transdisciplinary to more subject-specific learning. As students grow older, they are ready to explore subjects like science, mathematics, and Individuals and Societies in greater depth and with more focus. While learning becomes more discipline-based in the MYP, students are still encouraged to explore big ideas and connections between subjects. Each year includes at least one interdisciplinary unit, allowing learners to integrate knowledge and apply their understanding across multiple fields—supporting both critical thinking and real-world relevance.

Diploma Programme (DP)

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) offers students an opportunity for in-depth, subject-specific learning, while promoting interdisciplinary thinking through its core components. These include Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), and the Extended Essay—each designed to help students connect ideas across subjects, reflect critically, and take responsible action. While subjects are taught individually, students can tailor their academic experience by choosing both the subjects and the level of challenge, such as selecting Higher Level Biology or Standard Level Chemistry. The DP forms the final stage of the IB continuum, preparing students for university and beyond by fostering intellectual rigor, personal growth, and global awareness.

Units of Inquiry (UOI)

In the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), learning is centered around deep, transdisciplinary concepts called Units of Inquiry (UOIs). Each UOI explores a central idea under a global theme—such as “Sharing the Planet”—encouraging students to make meaningful connections across subject areas like science, language, arts, and social studies.

Rather than being told facts, students engage in guided exploration through lines of inquiry. For example, while investigating “living vs. non-living,” they learn to ask questions, seek evidence, and construct understanding. As students grow, they take more ownership of the inquiry process, developing skills in research, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Each UOI concludes with a summative task—such as a project, performance, or portfolio—that allows students to demonstrate their learning in creative, authentic ways. Through this model, the PYP fosters a lasting spirit of inquiry and builds a strong foundation for the continuum of IB learning in later years.
